DOOLING TO NETS

The New Jersey Nets acquired guard Keyon Dooling from the Orlando Magic for cash considerations.

What does it give the New Jersey Nets
Dooling is a solid veteran backup combo guard who will likely fill the same role for the Nets as he did for the Magic: playing around 20 minutes a game and backing up both guard spots. As this was a sign-and-trade and Orlando wasn't rushing to keep Dooling, the cost was low. All it took the Nets to acquire his services was a bit of cash and a trade exception left over from the Jason Kidd deal; in today's wacky market, that's a bargain for a decent veteran player, even one who usually comes off the bench.

What does it give the Orlando Magic
The Magic have been determined to retool their backcourt this off-season, and so far they have done just that. First-round draft choice Courtney Lee and free agent pickup Mickael Pietrus are in, while Dooling is now out and last season's starter Maurice Evans (an unrestricted free agent) now also looks likely to be headed elsewhere next season. The sign-and-trade element here benefits the Magic in that they acquire some cap flexibility (via a trade exception).
