CABRERA, WILLIS TO MOTOWN
The Detroit Tigers acquired third baseman Miguel Cabrera and pitcher Dontrelle Willis from the Florida Marlins for outfielder Cameron Maybin, catcher Mike Rabelo and pitchers Andrew Miller, Eulogio De La Cruz, Dallas Trahern and Burke Badenhop.
What does it give the Detroit Tigers
In Cabrera, the Tigers add one of the best hitters in baseball. The right-handed slugger could play third base or left field with Detroit, and he should flourish in the American League surrounded by great hitters. Willis struggled badly last season, but he's a proven winner with devastating stuff when on his game. He'll join right-handers Justin Verlander and Jeremy Bonderman, as well as left-handers Nate Robertson and Kenny Rogers to form one of the best rotations in the game. Following this move, the Tigers are now prohibitive favorites to win the AL Central in 2008.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Marlins get younger again, but at least this organization is used to the quick rebuild. Maybin could turn into a star quickly, as he's likely to take over in center field with the Fish. Miller has the potential to become an even better southpaw than Willis, though it will take some time for him to develop his full arsenal of pitches. Rabelo could be part of a catching platoon in South Florida, especially since Miguel Olivo may be on his way out as well. As for pitching prospects De La Cruz, Trahern and Badenhop, they add to Florida's growing stable of young talent.
