TEXAS AND DETROIT CONNECT ON ANOTHER TRADE

The Texas Rangers acquired pitcher Andrew Chafin from the Detroit Tigers for pitchers Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee.

What does it give the Texas Rangers
The Rangers phoned up the Tigers again, this time acquiring left-handed reliever Andrew Chafin. He will become the Rangers' top left-handed option out of the bullpen. No stranger to that role, he owns a 3.16 ERA and great strikeout rate in 41 games this season. He is exactly what this Texas bullpen needs if they have even the slightest chance of making the playoffs.

What does it give the Detroit Tigers
Montalvo will be Rule 5 eligible this off-season, leaving the Tigers with a decision to make. It should be an easy one, as Montalvo has climbed the minor-league ranks as a high strikeout starting pitcher. Lee is a side-arming reliever who has been pitching in Triple-A. His unique delivery and strikeout rate in the minors should get him an MLB opportunity soon.

Fantasy impact
Chafin should see plenty of late-game opportunities against left-handed hitters, but do not confuse that with him being a setup man. The Rangers already have David Robertson to do that role, which limits Chafin's value. Montalvo and Lee have no impact on fantasy baseball for the time being.
