TIGERS ADD PITCHERS FISTER, PAULEY

The Detroit Tigers acquired pitchers Doug Fister and David Pauley from the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Charlie Furbush, outfielder Casper Wells, third baseman Francisco Martinez, and right-handed pitcher Chance Ruffin.

What does it give the Detroit Tigers
The Tigers were looking for a starter, so Fister should upgrade the rotation to some extent. He is having a breakthrough season, so there is always a fear that he may not be able to handle the added pressure of a pennant race. Pauley should also help the Tigers, in his case in middle relief. The Tigers paid a steep price to shore up their pitching deficiencies, though.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
The key player for Seattle could be young Martinez, who should move to the front of the pack of Mariners' third-base prospects. He's raw, but talented, and Seattle needs plenty of help on offense. Furbush should be a serviceable starter for the M's, while Wells has a chance to play a lot more in Seattle. Add Ruffin (a highly-touted arm with a lot of strikeout ability), and the Mariners did very well in this deal.
