LaROCHE TO BEANTOWN

The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman Adam LaRoche from the Pittsburgh Pirates for shortstop Argenis Diaz and pitcher Hunter Strickland.

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox were looking for a little more pop, as well as infield depth. Enter LaRoche, who will probably be used as a part-time first baseman, occasional DH and backup in case one of David Ortiz, Kevin Youkilis or Mike Lowell gets injured.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pirates are once again in full-blown rebuilding mode, so dumping LaRoche's fat contract is a huge part of this deal. Diaz has elite ability with the glove, but is a questionable hitter. Strickland may wind up being the key piece to the deal, but he's several years away.
