Twins manager Rocco Baldelli named Lopez the team's Opening Day starter Wednesday, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
Lopez (15-10) took the loss Friday as the Twins were downed 7-2 by the Orioles, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out eight.
Throws strikes early and often, works quickly and displays good control on the mound. Owns a solid, projectable frame. Also keeps the ball down in the strike zone, which leads to plenty of groundball outs. Is not a dominant strikeout pitcher, so he will always rely heavily on his defense behind him to make plays. Also, at times he is around the strike zone a bit too much (and hitters tee off on his offerings).
Long Range Potential: Solid right-hander with upside.
