Dodgers manager Dave Roberts revealed Thursday that Ohtani will not face hitters as a pitcher before going to Japan so that he can ramp up his preparations as a hitter, Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reports.
Ohtani (shoulder/elbow) went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in a Cactus League win over the Angels on Friday.
One of the most talented (and unique) players to come along in years, he excels as a two-way performer (at lower levels). As a pitcher, he has great stuff and a live arm. Can dominate batters via the strikeout. As a batter, he generates excellent bat speed and is a pure hitter. Injuries and a lack of bulk and strength put into question whether he will be able to handle playing both ways over a long period of time at the highest level. He may have more upside as a pitcher than hitter, but his overall value in MLB drops if he cannot do both successfully.
