The Orioles agreed to terms with Mateo on a one-year contract Tuesday with a club option for 2026 to avoid arbitration.
Orioles general manager Mike Elias said Friday that Mateo (elbow) might not be fully recovered for the start of spring training, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.
Owns game-changing speed and base-stealing prowess, so he can impact a baseball game in a big way. Has the tools to be a quality big-league defender, somewhere. Also displays plenty of untapped home-run power. Needs to improve his approach at the dish and become more selective in order to maximize his on-base output in MLB (which would maximize his base-stealing aptitude). Must also work on his defensive consistency.
Long Range Potential: Quality, versatile speed demon with upside.
