FEDOROV TRADED TO COLUMBUS

The Columbus Blue Jackets acquired center Sergei Fedorov and a fifth-round draft pick in 2006 from the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim for forward Tyler Wright and defenseman Francois Beauchemin.

What does it give the Columbus Blue Jackets
In Fedorov, the Jackets finally have the top center to be able to compete with the likes of Detroit and Nashville in the Central Division. Fedorov is no stranger to the division, since he spent most of his career in Motown. He'll likely be asked to lead the way on the No. 1 line between underachieving fellow Russian Nikolai Zherdev and Czech right wing David Vyborny.

What does it give the Anaheim Ducks
Welcome to the "new" NHL. Not only do teams value salary-cap space, but they must surrender draft picks just to be able to move expensive salaries. Such is the case here, as the Ducks felt compelled to alleviate their salary-sap situation by unloading Fedorov. Beauchemin could be a valuable defenseman for Anaheim, while Wright is strictly a fourth-line player with heart, leadership qualities and energy.
