RANGERS ADD DEPTH D-MAN FALK

The New York Rangers acquired defenseman Justin Falk from the Minnesota Wild for forward Benn Ferriero and a sixth-round draft pick in 2014.

What does it give the New York Rangers
This is a solid depth move for the Rangers, especially because the likes of {P Steve Eminger}, {P Roman Hamrlik} and {P Matt Gilroy} will all be unrestricted free agents on July 5, so Falk will likely take over as the No. 7 defenseman in Manhattan. The career-threatening concussion sustained by {P Michael Sauer} is also a factor here. Essentially, the Rangers gave up a sixth rounder for Falk, since Ferriero might not have been offered a new contract.

What does it give the Minnesota Wild
Falk was a restricted free agent for a Minnesota team that has cap issues going into this off-season. His departure helps a little, plus it gives more opportunities to the likes of {P Marco Scandella} and {P Matt Dumba} moving forward. Ferriero, like Falk, is a restricted free agent but won't cost nearly as much. He'll be a depth player for the Wild if he signs on the dotted line. And, obviously, landing a 2014 pick was the main asset arriving to the Twin Cities.

Fantasy impact
This move doesn't have much fantasy impact at all, except maybe for Scandella (who is now close to a lock for a regular job with the Wild). Otherwise, this is mostly a depth situation for all parties concerned.
