AUCOIN TO CALGARY
The Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Adrian Aucoin and a seventh-round draft pick in 2007 from the Chicago Blackhawks for defensemen Andrei Zyuzin and Steve Marr.
What does it give the Calgary Flames
In Aucoin, the Flames reunite coach Mike Keenan with one of his former stalwart blueliners during his stint in Vancouver. Aucoin's $4 million contract was a problem for the rebuilding Blackhawks, who had even made Aucoin their captain. The Flames will use Aucoin on the point of the power play opposite Dion Phaneuf, but they are taking a major gamble that Aucoin's groin issues are now a thing of the past.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
In Zyuzin, the 'Hawks get a serviceable blueliner that will probably play a No. 6 or 7 role in Chicago. The move saves the club plenty of cap space for both the 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns, which was GM Dale Tallon's major motivation for making the deal. With the money saved, Tallon is now expected to be a major player on the unrestricted free agent market on July 1.
