AVS, PENS SWAP DEFENSEMEN
The Colorado Avalanche acquired defenseman Brett Kulak from the Pittsburgh Penguins for defenseman Samuel Girard and a second-round draft pick in 2028.
What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
In Kulak, the Avalanche land a steady defenseman who shoots left, something they were lacking on the squad. Look for Kulak to be paired with Sam Malinski on Colorado's third pairing. He should also see a fair amount of time on the penalty kill. His steady, defense-first approach should really help the Avs.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Penguins
The Penguins continue to tinker this season, which has been a very surprisingly strong regular schedule (so far). Girard is more of a puck mover than Kulak, so he could be a good fit for a Pittsburgh team that relies heavily on veterans Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang. The second rounder is a great addition, too.
Fantasy impact
Kulak rarely sees the ice on the power play, something that should continue in Denver. Therefore, his fantasy value is negligible. As for Girard, he is unlikely to see enough time on the Pittsburgh power play (one of the best in the NHL) to make a huge difference. He would be a speculative addition to some fantasy leagues down the stretch, but not all.
