TORONTO TRADES FOR D-MAN EDMUNDSON
The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired defenseman Joel Edmundson from the Washington Capitals for a third-round draft pick in 2024 and a fifth-round draft pick in 2025.
What does it give the Toronto Maple Leafs
It is a well-known fact that Toronto has been shopping for a right defenseman for much of 2023-24. After landing Ilya Lyubushkin earlier, Edmundson comes in next as a left-shooting defenseman capable of playing on either side of the ice. He is likely a pure rental for a Maple Leafs team looking to break through in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
What does it give the Washington Capitals
The Capitals did very well here by acquiring two draft picks in exchange for a pending unrestricted free agent defenseman. While Washington is still in the playoff race in the East, they are also committed to getting younger. The Caps are taking a more long-term view of things these days, which was probably overdue. They did well with this trade.
Fantasy impact
There is no fantasy impact after this trade, as Edmundson is mostly a defensive defender who will probably play on the third pairing and kill penalties for Toronto.
