PANTHERS ADD SULZER FROM NASHVILLE
The Florida Panthers acquired defenseman Alexander Sulzer from the Nashville Predators for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2012.
What does it give the Florida Panthers
Sulzer is a pretty decent puck-moving defenseman, with some solid offensive acumen. Therefore, it stands to reason that he was acquired at this time as a potential replacement for captain Bryan McCabe, who is rumored to be on the trading block. Sulzer has defensive issues, but Florida needs more offense. Therefore, this was a smart little move that could wind up paying bigger dividends than expected.
What does it give the Nashville Predators
The Predators moved out Sulzer essentially to keep rookie Jon Blum up with the big club. The latter has impressed the coaching staff early and often since his call-up. By moving Sulzer, the Preds continued their steep tradition of using the farm system to replenish the roster. The draft pick headed to Nashville is likely conditional upon Sulzer re-signing with Florida as a UFA this summer.
