AVALANCHE ADD VARLAMOV
The Colorado Avalanche acquired goaltender Semyon Varlamov from the Washington Capitals for a first-round draft pick in 2012 and a conditional second-round draft pick.
What does it give the Colorado Avalanche
The Avalanche had a major hole between the pipes, so Varlamov should be an upgrade here. He will likely see a ton of rubber and appear in 60 games if he can stay healthy--which has been an issue with him. They gave up a lot, but needed a No. 1 goalie with upside.
What does it give the Washington Capitals
With three goalies in the fold, the Caps had a stranglehold on the situation. They were not willing to move Varlamov unless GM George McPhee received a great offer--and he did. Adding a first rounder in 2012 and a second rounder in either 2012 or 2013 (Washington's choice, reportedly) gives McPhee more future assets.
