CLOUTIER TO L.A.
The Los Angeles Kings acquired goaltender Dan Cloutier from the Vancouver Canucks for a second-round draft pick in 2007 and a conditional draft pick in 2009.
What does it give the Los Angeles Kings
The Kings were not satisfied with the inexperienced goalie tandem of Mathieu Garon and Jason LaBarbera, so they added Cloutier. The latter is very familiar with new L.A. coach Marc Crawford, so he should immediately fit right in with the Kings. Entering the final year of his contract, Cloutier faces a make-or-break season. If he falters in 2006-07, his days as a starter are over.
What does it give the Vancouver Canucks
The Canucks needed salary-cap relief, and Kings GM Dean Lombardi obliged. Adding one high draft pick--and potentially two if Cloutier re-signs with the Kings--is merely icing on the cake for Vancouver. GM Dave Nonis pulled a fast one on Lombardi, and is now in good position to make more moves.
