ERIK GUSTAFSSON GOES TO CALGARY
The Calgary Flames acquired defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the Chicago Blackhawks for a conditional third-round draft pick in 2020.
What does it give the Calgary Flames
With injuries to both Mark Giordano and Travis Hamonic, Flames GM Brad Treliving felt he had no choice but to add more depth to his blueline before the deadline. Gustafsson might quarterback Calgary's power play while Giordano remains out of the lineup. He is a decent addition, especially for a cheap player on an expiring contract.
What does it give the Chicago Blackhawks
The Blackhawks decided to become sellers this year, with Gustafsson being one of the top players shipped out. In return, Chicago will receive a third-round pick in '20 from Calgary (either the Flames' pick or the Oilers' pick, if Edmonton's pick does in fact become Calgary property due to the conditions attached to it). It is complicated.
Fantasy impact
Gustafsson had more value in Chicago when he was quarterbacking their power play. However, he lost that job during the regular season so he should be better off in the short term as a member of the Flames. However, Giordano will be back to assume that role in Calgary, so it might be a good time to sell Gustafsson in several fantasy formats.
