DAVID MONTGOMERY DEALT TO HOUSTON
The Houston Texans acquired running back David Montgomery from the Detroit Lions for offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, a fourth-round draft pick in 2026 (No. 128 overall) and a seventh-round draft pick in 2027.
What does it give the Houston Texans
The Texans like to pound the football via the running game, so Montgomery should be a nice fit this season. He is likely to team with promising youngster Woody Marks to form a solid running back duo. That said, losing Scruggs makes their thin offensive line even thinner going into free agency and the draft.
What does it give the Detroit Lions
For the Lions, the hope here is that Scruggs can solve their issues at the center position moving forward. Frank Ragnow will remain retired and fellow vet Graham Glasgow was released. Losing Montgomery should mean an expanded role for running back Jahmyr Gibbs, one of the best in the NFL.
Fantasy impact
Montgomery's arrival in Houston may not be the greatest news for Marks, although he should continue to be used in tandem. Veteran Joe Mixon's days in Houston now appear to be numbered. As for Montgomery, he remains a steady fantasy running back. Nothing flashy here but his production should remain solid.
