THUNDER/JAZZ SWAP
Oklahoma City Thunder acquired guards Eric Maynor and Matt Harpring from the Utah Jazz for forward Peter Fehse.
What does it give the Oklahoma City Thunder
The cagey Thunder and GM Sam Presti strike again. Very quietly Presti is building what may eventually be a powerhouse, and Maynor is the prize here. As a first-round pick this year by Utah (No.20 overall) Maynor has the goods to be a starting point guard in the NBA, and should develop into a top backup for Russell Westbrook (and potential sixth man). Harpring may never play again due to injuries, but adding his expiring $6.5 Million salary to the cap was the price Presti paid for Maynor. A nice move by the Thunder, who had the cap space to pull it off.
What does it give the Utah Jazz
The Jazz got into a financial pinch over the summer when Harpring decided not to retire and the likes of Mehmet Okur, Carlos Boozer, and Kyle Korver decided to exercise contract options to stay with the team. When added to the matching of the four-year, $32 Million offer sheet Portland made to Paul Millsap, Utah was on pace to be over the salary cap (and in line to pay the dollar-for-dollar tax). Moving Harpring and Maynor saves them roughly $8 Million at the end of the day. Fehse is an aging former draft pick who plays in Germany, and seems to have been included only to satisfy NBA rules ensuring Utah gets something in return.
