LAKERS, MAGIC TRADE RESERVE GUYS

The Los Angeles Lakers acquired forward Trevor Ariza from the Orlando Magic for forward Brian Cook guard-forward Maurice Evans.

What does it give the Los Angeles Lakers
Essentially this deal helps the Lakers increase their talent-level while cutting some payroll. Ariza has more potential than Cook or Evans and his salary of about $3.1 Million is less that the $5-plus Mil the other two cost. Ariza also fits in better than the other two with head coach Phil Jackson's defensive needs, and is a slasher who can add a speed element to L.A.'s game. Not a bad move for the Lakers.

What does it give the Orlando Magic
In Cook and Evans the Magic get two proven and solid veterans to beef up their bench. After soaring to a 10-2 start this season it seems Orlando has decided they're a contender in the weak East, as it's obvious this move is to help them win now rather than later. Ariza was a potential starter before the season started but he just wasn't fitting into their rotation. It cost them a little extra in salary, but the Magic make a smart move here by loading up for a playoff run and allowing Cook and Evans to gel with their teammates early on in the season.
