THOMAS HEADS TO SAN ANTONIO

The San Antonio Spurs acquired center/forward Kurt Thomas from the Seattle SuperSonics for center Francisco Elson, guard Brent Barry and a first-round draft pick at the 2009 draft.

What does it give the San Antonio Spurs
In Thomas the Spurs get a perfect fit for their needs: an established veteran half-court power player who can step right in at center. They've struggled to find the right fit in the middle for a few years now, and in Thomas they have a player who can do the dirty work, score a little, and take over right away. He also helps the team keep pace with all the other Western conference contenders who have added quality big-men recently (including the Lakers and Suns).

What does it give the Seattle SuperSonics
Ultimately the main thing the Sonics get here is the first-rounder. The contracts for Elson and Barry are expiring, and equal roughly what Thomas' would have in terms of cap space. So this deal really comes down to Seattle adding another draft pick. Elson and Barry are quality role players, but don't appear to be part of this team's long-term plans.
