SONICS "FLIP" MURRAY TO CAVS
The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired guard Ronald Murray from the Seattle SuperSonics in exchange for guard Mike Wilks, a future second-round draft pick and $500,000 cash.
What does it give the Cleveland Cavaliers
Cleveland gets a legitimate shooting guard for the stretch run to fill the void left by the injured Larry Hughes. Known to many fans as 'Flip," Murray has legitimate 20-point-per-game capability if given the opportunity. He showed in limited auditions filling in for Ray Allen that he has the talent to be a starting 2-guard in the NBA, and with the Cavs he may get a chance. The duo of Sasha Pavlovic and Damon Jones provides outside shooting but neither is as good at going to the hoops as Murray. With his contract running out after this season, Murray is a 'rent-a-player' for a team trying to make the playoffs.
What does it give the Seattle SuperSonics
The draft pick and the cash are a nice consolation prize for Murray, who was likely to leave after this season ended. Wilks is an athletic and highly underrated point guard who is actually quite similar to Earl Watson, whom the Sonics acquired earlier in the day. Wilks may be waived, but if he isn't the Sonics may give him an audition for the rest of the season. Murray is more valuable than the return Seattle got for him, but with so many shooters on the same team he just didn't get much of a chance to play.
