SUNS BRING IN BROOKS

The Phoenix Suns acquired point guard Aaron Brooks from the Houston Rockets for point guard Goran Dragic and a lottery-protected first-round draft pick.

What does it give the Phoenix Suns
The Suns are a veteran team trying to make a playoff push while it's aging stars are still able to do it. With that in mind this is a nice move for them depth-wise, but it's also a potentially solid trade for the future, as Brooks is a star (as last year's NBA Most Improved Player) and may settle in as a key player for Phoenix. For now Brooks provides excellent depth in the backcourt, and if he fits in he may eventually replace Steve Nash down the road. If Brooks doesn't work out well, Phoenix can move on easily (as his affordable contract is expiring). Giving up a first-rounder and Dragic is a fairly hefty package, but the Suns take a solid risk here overall.

What does it give the Houston Rockets
Houston seems to be in rebuild mode and Brooks was very unhappy as a backup after last season's breakout. Dragic hasn't been very dependable lately after a promising start to his NBA career, but he adds good backcourt depth to an increasingly young Houston squad. The first-round pick is a very nice return for Brooks, who wasn't much of a factor this season for Houston and needed a change of scenery. Meanwhile, Dragic's deal is expiring, so Houston can free up cap space if he doesn't pan out.
