ROCKETS TRADE TWO FOR WESLEY
The Houston Rockets acquired guard David Wesley from the New Orleans Hornets for forwards Jim Jackson and Bostjan Nachbar.
What does it give the New Orleans Pelicans
An immediate infusion of talent and depth. Wesley was a long-standing
soldier and leader for the Hornets, but the team has been so awful this
season they need a drastic change--and as much new talent--as they can
get. Jackson will step right in and provide consistent scoring and
leadership--albeit not as much as Wesley did--and more importantly can
run better with the young Hornets than Wesley did. Nachbar is an
intriguing talent who's mostly an outside shooter, and he might blossom
a bit with more playing time in 'Nawlins. All-in-all, a nice little
gambit by the Hornets.
What does it give the Houston Rockets
A player who isn't a star, or an upgrade talent-wise from Jackson. So
why the trade? This move is likely an attempt to further solidify the
'character' around Yao Ming and Tracy McGrady. Jackson is more talented
than Wesley, but he's not seen as quite the 'team-first' guy Wesley
is--but then few players are. Wesley is a consummate professional,
albeit not the NBA's most talented one. Along with newly-acquired Jon
Barry and point guard Bobby Sura, Wesley seems to be yet another piece
of a character-first, non-star support system being built for Yao and
McGrady.
