SIMMONS-WESLEY DEAL

The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired forward Cedric Simmons from the New Orleans Hornets for guard David Wesley.

What does it give the Cleveland Cavaliers
In Simmons the Cavs get a talented and athletic young big-man. He is still very raw, but he has the potential to eventually become an above-average NBA power forward. The Cavs recently signed shooting guard Devin Brown, so Wesley wasn't needed anymore and cashing him in for Simmons is a bit of a coup. Simmons will also help bolster Cleveland's forward depth since the Cavs still haven't signed restricted free agents Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic.

What does it give the New Orleans Pelicans
At 36, Wesley is past his best days in the NBA and the Hornets are not expected to keep him. By trading Simmons the Hornets really only get one thing: a way to cut salary from their cap. Wesley's salary isn't huge, but removing it from their cap might free up money for another free agent.
