FOX, LAVINE MOVED IN 3-TEAM DEAL
In a three-team trade, the San Antonio Spurs acquired guards De'Aaron Fox and Jordan McLaughlin from the Sacramento Kings; Sacramento acquired guard/forward Zach LaVine and a second-round draft pick in 2028 from the Chicago Bulls, and guard/forward Sidy Cissoko, a protected first-round draft pick in 2025, a first-round draft pick in 2027, a first-round draft pick in 2031, a second-round draft pick in 2025 and a second-round draft pick in 2028 from the Spurs; and Chicago acquired guard/forward Kevin Huerter from Sacramento, and center/forward Zach Collins, guard Tre Jones and a first-round draft pick in 2025 from San Antonio.
What does it give the San Antonio Spurs
The blockbusters just keep on coming! Fox is a tremendous addition to the Spurs, an up-and-coming team that seems to be slightly ahead of their projection as a rebuilding squad. Fox is likely to supplant veteran Chris Paul as the starting point guard, which gives the team excellent depth at the ball-handling position. McLaughlin was thrown into this deal for even more depth at the point guard position, though he is unlikely to see a lot of playing time behind Fox and Paul in San Antonio.
What does it give the Sacramento Kings
For the Kings, losing Fox will hurt some but adding LaVine should help curb things a little. LaVine and DeMar DeRozan were teammates in Chicago, so that familiarity should help LaVine make a relatively quick transition to Sacramento. Cissoko is raw but talented, so he might find his way into the Kings' rotation at some point this season. Adding six more draft picks in this trade should also help ease things as the Kings begin the post-Fox era. Sacramento did well here.
What does it give the Chicago Bulls
For the Bulls, losing LaVine will hurt a bit but his departure seemed like an inevitability for some time now. Huerter is not at LaVine's level as a scorer or athlete, but he can come off the bench and provide offense. He also plays three positions, which should help Chicago's rotation moving forward. Jones could become the backup point guard on the Bulls, although he has competition for that gig, while Collins could become an important piece up front if (when?) Nikola Vucevic is traded.
Fantasy impact
There may be a clear winner in this trade from a fantasy standpoint, and it may be LaVine. He teamed with DeRozan before in Chicago, and that combination was successful. LaVine should be picked up if available, which is unlikely at this point. Fox should see a spike in assists playing with Victor Wembanyama in San Antonio, but his points-per-game average may dip slightly. Huerter may be worth a speculative pick-up in some leagues because he could become a more prominent member of Chicago's bench than in Sacramento. None of the other players in this trade will likely see a change in fantasy value after being moved.
