CASTRO RETURNS TO REDS
The Cincinnati Reds acquired infielder Juan Castro from the Minnesota Twins for minor-league outfielder Brandon Roberts.
What does it give the Cincinnati Reds
With young third baseman Edwin Encarnacion on the disabled list, the Reds needed to bulk up on their infield depth and they got a solid veteran in Castro. The club is very familiar with Castro's strong defense and decent bat from his five seasons in Cincinnati from 2000-2004.
What does it give the Minnesota Twins
First off, the Twins have plenty of depth around the infield, particularly with Jason Bartlett up to play shortstop, so Castro became expendable. In return they got a super-speedy 21-year-old in his third pro season. But he is still at the Single-A level due to his inability to sustain a high batting average, so his long-term value is slim at this point.
