A'S, BREWERS SWAP MINOR-LEAGUERS

The Oakland Athletics acquired catcher J.D. Closser from the Milwaukee Brewers for outfielder Charles Thomas.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
With Mike Piazza on the disabled list, the acquisition of Closser gives the A's a little more catching depth. Not long ago, the 27-year-old was considered the catcher of the future for the Rockies, but he struggled to hit big-league pitching and has lost his power stroke in the minors. He'll stick around at Triple-A in case anything happens to Jason Kendall or Adam Melhuse.

What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
They're stacked in the outfield in Milwaukee, but Thomas gives them a little more depth in the minors. He can do a little bit of everything but not a lot of any one thing, so he can be a serviceable bench guy.
