YANKS SWAP PROCTOR FOR BETEMIT

The New York Yankees acquired infielder Wilson Betemit from the Los Angeles Dodgers Scott Proctor.

What does it give the New York Yankees
For the short term the Yankees' bench just got a little deeper with addition of the young switch-hitter. If DH Jason Giambi can't return from the disabled list fully healthy down the stretch, Betemit could get some starts at DH thanks to his decent power and he can capably back up just about anywhere in the infield. In the long term, he could be a backup option for third base if Alex Rodriguez decides to void his contract after this season.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
The very top of the Dodgers' bullpen has been fantastic this year in closer Takashi Saito and setup man Jonathan Broxton. But the rest has been pretty lackluster. The addition of Proctor, a hard-throwing righty, deepens their late-relief corps as they try to emerge from the clutter atop the NL West. In just his fourth big-league season, he'll remain in the Dodgers' bullpen for another couple of years.
