A's TAKE A FLYER ON KA'AIHUE

The Oakland Athletics acquired first baseman Kila Ka'aihue from the Kansas City Royals for pitcher Ethan Hollingsworth.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
Ka'aihue is a typical Oakland acquisition during the (GM) Billy Beane era: a power hitter with great patience at the plate and questionable glove. Ka'aihue flamed out when handed the Royals' first baseman job this year, so he will look for redemption next spring training. This is a good gamble for the A's.

What does it give the Kansas City Royals
The Royals had designated Ka'aihue for assignment, so they did well to land an asset for him at this time. Hollingsworth is a 24-year-old righty with decent upside as a starter. Since the Royals have Eric Hosmer entrenched at first base (and Billy Butler as DH), there wasn't any room for Ka'aihue on the roster anymore.
