A'S SNAG SIZEMORE FROM TIGERS

The Oakland Athletics acquired second baseman Scott Sizemore from the Detroit Tigers for pitcher David Purcey.

What does it give the Oakland Athletics
The A's still have veteran Mark Ellis playing well at the keystone spot, but he'll be 34 years old soon. Moreover, with utilityman Andy LaRoche not playing particularly well and starting third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff struggling mightily, adding the talented-but-inconsistent Sizemore is an all-round nice depth move here. Oakland's excellent pitching depth allows them to take a solid risk here on an offensive player who still has some untapped upside.

What does it give the Detroit Tigers
The Tigers don't have a proven replacement for Sizemore at second base but he just didn't pan out for them as expected, and they need Purcey's bullpen arm more right now. Ryan Raburn may see the lion's share of at-bats at second going forward, with Ramon Santiago and Danny Worth also in the mix. Purcey is an underrated lefty with experience both starting and relieving, and his solid recent work in Oakland suggests he could help the Tigers protect some leads right away.
