RAYS, ROCKIES MAKE A 4-PLAYER SWAP
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired outfielder Corey Dickerson and infielder Kevin Padlo from the Colorado Rockies for pitchers Jake McGee and German Marquez.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
This is an interesting trade, mainly because both teams traded from a position of strength to help curb an organizational weakness. The Rays needed more pop in their lineup, so adding Dickerson was a solid move. He will likely play left field most of the time, possibly sitting against left-handers. His acquisition may make Desmond Jennings expendable (or a bench player). Padlo is an interesting prospect who may have to switch positions because he's now stuck behind Evan Longoria.
What does it give the Colorado Rockies
For the Rockies, this deal was about trading one of their surplus outfielders for more pitching help. McGee should team with fellow newcomers Jason Motte and Chad Qualls to form a solid bullpen trio in the late innings. Marquez adds more depth to the rotation (or bullpen), though he will need more time before reaching the big leagues. The arrival of Gerardo Parra to patrol left field made Dickerson expendable, while Nolan Arenado will hold down third base for years to come.
Fantasy impact
Dickerson's fantasy value might decrease slightly moving from Colorado to Tampa Bay, though he was scheduled to be the Rockies' fourth outfielder after the arrival of Parra so this trade helps him a bit. McGee's fantasy value may decrease a bit with the move to Coors Field, while Marquez and Padlo should be keeper-league radar material at this time.
