MARINERS ADD C CASTILLO FROM THE CUBS
The Seattle Mariners acquired catcher Welington Castillo from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Yoervis Medina.
What does it give the Seattle Mariners
The Mariners land a pretty solid catcher who lost his starting gig in the Windy City (but is still only 28 years old). For now, expect Castillo to back up Seattle starting catcher Mike Zunino. However, the latter is hitting under .200 so Castillo may cut into his playing time (if he starts to hit, as he too is under .200).
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
For the Cubs, this move was mostly about moving their No. 3 catcher in order to get him some playing time, while getting back a decent bullpen arm in Medina. Moving forward, the Cubs will go with Miguel Montero and David Ross behind the plate, with top prospect Kyle Schwarber waiting in the wings.
Fantasy impact
Castillo is a fantasy dark horse, as he might become a factor if he starts cutting into Zunino's playing time. As for Medina, he has some fantasy value but won't likely be a saves factor for a while. By season's end, he could provide holds though.
