BRAVES LAND BONIFACIO AND RUSSELL

The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder/infielder Emilio Bonifacio, pitcher James Russell and cash from the Chicago Cubs for catcher Victor Caratini.

What does it give the Atlanta Braves
This is a good deal for the Braves, as Bonifacio can provide backup help at second and third base, as well as all three outfield positions. He could even take over in center field for {P B.J. Upton} and become a better option in the leadoff spot. Russell will give Atlanta a quality lefty for the late innings, which has been a sore spot for the club this year because of the injury to {P Jonny Venters}.

What does it give the Chicago Cubs
Caratini is an intriguing prospect for the Cubs, who aren't settled on their catcher of the future. Caratini is a switch-hitting catcher who only turns 21 in a couple of weeks, so his upside is quite high. Chicago loves 2014 first rounder {P Kyle Schwarber}, but he might not stick behind the dish. Therefore, Caratini provides another option for this burgeoning group of top prospects.

Fantasy impact
Bonifacio's fantasy value could dip if he is used mostly as a utility player down the stretch, while Russell's value should remain intact. The Bonifacio deal could mean an early promotion for {P Javier Baez} as Chicago's second baseman. It should also give {P Arismendy Alcantara} more playing time (either in center field or at second base). As for Caratini, he should now be on the keeper-league radar.
