GIANTS GET PENCE FROM PHILLY
The San Francisco Giants acquired outfielder Hunter Pence from the Philadelphia Phillies for outfielder Nate Schierholtz, first baseman/catcher Tommy Joseph and pitcher Seth Rosin.
What does it give the San Francisco Giants
The Giants needed a big bat for their offense, so Pence does fit here. San Francisco also needed to upgrade right field, so Pence may be the perfect pickup. He is a bit of a free swinger (a common occurrence with the Giants), but he fills a void. The Giants also got the Phillies to pay for part of Pence's salary in the deal. The Giants' best asset surrendered in this deal is probably Joseph, but the presence of Buster Posey behind the plate made the decision to deal Joseph a lot easier.
What does it give the Philadelphia Phillies
In Schierholtz, the Phillies land a potential replacement for Pence in right field--although prospect Domonic Brown is another possibility. Joseph will immediately become Philadelphia's catcher of the future, though Carlos Ruiz is still entrenched as the starter for a while. Rosin can start or relieve and has a huge frame. He is a ways away but has pretty good upside. Overall, the Phillies got a pretty solid return for their everyday right-fielder here, though it hurts them right now.
