A'S GET CALLASPO FROM RIVAL ANGELS
The Oakland Athletics acquired infielder Alberto Callaspo from the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Grant Green.
What does it give the Oakland Athletics
In Callaspo, the A's land a solid veteran switch-hitting infielder who has played mostly third base for some time now (but can also play second base). Oakland has {P Josh Donaldson} at third base (a right-handed batter) and lefty-swinging {P Eric Sogard} seeing most of the at-bats at second base. Therefore, Callaspo may move back and forth between the two positions until someone plays his way out of the lineup. If nothing else, Callaspo gives contending Oakland infield depth. It also gives Oakland more trade options.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
Green is an Anaheim native who should soon be playing regularly at home. The 25-year-old has long been a solid prospect in the A's system but was never able to find a position to call his own. He is a natural shortstop who has also seen plenty of time in the outfield and (more recently) at second base. The current opening on the Angels is at third base (vacated by Callaspo), so Green could get a shot there. Or, he may replace either SS {P Erick Aybar} or 2B {P Howard Kendrick} if more deals are made before the trade deadline.
Fantasy impact
This deal could be a big win for Green, who needed a chance to prove himself somewhere other than Oakland. He should get that opportunity but his everyday position is as of yet unknown. As for Callaspo, Donaldson and Sogard, this deal hurts all three to some degree until/unless the A's settle on a new everyday infield lineup.
