WOOD TO THE BRONX

The New York Yankees acquired pitcher Kerry Wood and cash from the Cleveland Indians for two players to be named later.

What does it give the New York Yankees
The Yankees were searching for a late-inning reliever to help bridge the gap between the starters and closer Mariano Rivera, so look for Wood to become the eighth-inning setup man--replacing the inconsistent Joba Chamberlain.

What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
The Tribe will move forward with Chris Perez as their full-time closer now, so moving Wood at this time makes a lot of sense. They also helped pay a bit of Wood's salary in order to complete the deal. Cleveland will receive a prospect in return for Wood.
