MICHAELS TO PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired outfielder Jason Michaels and cash from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named later.

What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Michaels should become a capable fourth outfielder for the Bucs, as he replaces the speedy Nyjer Morgan in that capacity. If he hits, he may see regular playing time against left-handed pitching--with regular right-fielder Xavier Nady a candidate to play first base against southpaws.

What does it give the Cleveland Guardians
The Tribe decided to go with the more promising bat of Ben Francisco over Michaels, which led to the latter being designated for assignment. Therefore, Cleveland GM Mark Shapiro will take a flyer on a prospect in exchange for a player he needed to move.
