MARQUIS, VIZCAINO SWAP PLACES

The Colorado Rockies acquired pitcher Jason Marquis from the Chicago Cubs for pitcher Luis Vizcaino.

What does it give the Colorado Rockies
The Rockies are always in the market for serviceable starting pitching, and Marquis brings just that. While he hasn't had an above-average campaign since 2005, the right-hander has hurled at least 167.0 innings in five straight seasons. He'll join Aaron Cook, Jeff Francis and Ubaldo Jimenez as part of a decent Colorado rotation that may be good enough to compete in the NL West.

What does it give the Chicago Cubs
The Cubs are loaded with starting pitching depth, which would have left Marquis as little more than an expensive fifth starter. This deal allows them to get a little salary off the books and pick up a quality bullpen arm in the process. Vizcaino could compete for a top setup role now that Carlos Marmol looks poised to move into the closer role.
