KOTCHMAN TO SEATTLE

The Seattle Mariners acquired first baseman Casey Kotchman from the Boston Red Sox for infielder/outfielder Bill Hall and a player to be named later.

What does it give the Seattle Mariners
In Kotchman, the Mariners land an excellent defensive first baseman who can also hit for a high average. He lacks power, but is otherwise capable of playing every day if given enough at-bats. This move completes Seattle's new-look offense, and adds yet another excellent glove to the infield.

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
The Red Sox can afford to have an expensive utility player on their bench like Hall, so he should be useful--especially since the M's are paying part of Hall's salary. Boston also receives a prospect to be named later. All this for a first baseman who was mainly a backup in Beantown.
