ALBERTO GONZALEZ TO PADRES

The San Diego Padres acquired infielder Alberto Gonzalez from the Washington Nationals for pitcher Erik Davis and cash.

What does it give the San Diego Padres
Gonzalez will be a solid backup infielder for the Padres. He's not a consistent offensive player, so he'll likely never play every day in the big leagues. But he does fill a hole in the infield coming off the bench.

What does it give the Washington Nationals
The Nats now boast super utility man Jerry Hairston Jr., which probably made Gonzalez expendable at this time. Davis is a midling prospect, but at least his upside is greater than that of Gonzalez. The cash is a bonus.
