BREW CREW NETS NYJER
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired outfielder Nyjer Morgan from the Washington Nationals for infielder Cutter Dykstra and cash.
What does it give the Milwaukee Brewers
Milwaukee seems intent on contending this year, and bringing in Morgan should help them do that. He has his limitations but is extremely fast, and loves to steal bases (something that should endear him to run-focused head coach Ron Roenicke). The Brewers' recent swap of backup center fielder Chris Dickerson to the Yankees opened a depth need in center, and getting Morgan here is a strong move considering Carlos Gomes is far from proven. At the worst, the Brewers now have a super-fast lefty-righty platoon in center with Morgan and Gomez.
What does it give the Washington Nationals
Dykstra is the son of former major league star Lenny Dykstra, and has his father's speed. He's still unproven as a prospect, but the Nats had no room for Morgan with Rick Ankiel now their center fielder and Michael Morse stepping up this spring to claim left field. All in all, the Nats mostly save money here while adding a solid long-range prospect and finding more at-bats for Morse.
