JEFF MCNEIL JOINS THE A'S
The Athletics acquired infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil and cash from the New York Mets for pitcher Yordan Rodriguez.
What does it give the Athletics
The Athletics add a veteran hitter to their young lineup by bringing in McNeil. The 33-year-old will likely become their starting second baseman, though he offers some positional versatility too. At this point, McNeil is not hitting for power or a high batting average, but he still grinds out at-bats and manages to get on base at an above-average clip.
What does it give the New York Mets
After a disastrous 2025 season, the Mets are moving on from long-time starter McNeil and going with Marcus Semien at second base. This trade is also a bit of a salary dump, so New York sent cash to the A's, and got back only a 17-year-old pitching prospect. Rodriguez is a Cuban right-hander who will now get his career started in the Mets organization.
Fantasy impact
McNeil's days as an impact fantasy hitter are likely over, and this trade should not change that. But keep an eye on him if his move to the A's hitter-friendly ball park in Sacramento gives him a boost this season.
