JOHAN OVIEDO BROUGHT IN BY BOSTON
The Boston Red Sox acquired pitchers Johan Oviedo, catcher Adonys Guzman and pitcher Tyler Samaniego from the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfielder Jhostynxon Garcia and pitcher Jesus Travieso.
What does it give the Boston Red Sox
Boston addresses their rotation depth by bringing in Oviedo. A serviceable starter just returning from Tommy John surgery, he has upside but often struggles with walks too. The Red Sox also add prospect depth at positions of greater need. Guzman is a young catcher, while Samaniego is a left-handed reliever from the 2021 draft who has been working his way up in the Minor Leagues.
What does it give the Pittsburgh Pirates
Pittsburgh needs to improve on offense, so Garcia is a solid addition. A good outfield prospect, he has little more to prove in the minors and should get a long look with the Pirates this season. They also restock their organizational pitching depth with Travieso, an 18-year-old right-hander just beginning his career.
Fantasy impact
Garcia is the winner of this trade in fantasy baseball. The young slugger will have a much easier path to playing time in Pittsburgh, so keep an eye on him the next few seasons. Oviedo will still have upside but remains a risky pick in Boston. He may not be a lock for a rotation spot this year, so wait and see what role he earns.
