RAYS ADD RELIEVER ENGLERT
The Tampa Bay Rays acquired pitcher Mason Englert from the Detroit Tigers for pitcher Drew Sommers.
What does it give the Tampa Bay Rays
Englert will add to Tampa Bay's pitching depth for the 2025 season. The right-hander is a multi-inning reliever who can also make a spot start. He has struggled in his early MLB work (5.45 ERA in 77.2 IP), but he delivered better results in the minors last year, so the Rays must see some potential here. Englert will compete for a bullpen job but may pitch for Triple-A Durham as well.
What does it give the Detroit Tigers
The Tigers designated Englert for assignment before this trade, so they did well to acquire a prospect in return. Sommers is a left-handed reliever selected by the Rays in the 2022 draft. The 24-year-old had a decent season at High Single-A ball in 2024, and he will look to build on that success now in Detroit's organization.
