The Oakland Athletics acquired catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Miami Marlins for cash.
What does it give the Athletics
The 28-year-old Pereda finally earned his first MLB call up last season (.231 BA, 4 RBI in 39 AB). In the minors, Pereda has never hit for much power, but he gets on base at a decent clip. He could be the favorite to win the backup catcher job in 2025.
What does it give the Miami Marlins
The Marlins addressed their catching depth in a few other recent transactions, so they designated Pereda for assignment just before this trade. At least they were able to get some cash from the Athletics in return for him.
Fantasy impact
Pereda is not much of a threat on offense, and he will be a backup if he makes the Athletics. So this trade will not have a fantasy impact.
