CUBS PICK UP PRESSLY
The Chicago Cubs acquired pitcher Ryan Pressly from the Houston Astros for pitcher Juan Bello.
What does it give the Chicago Cubs
In Pressly, Chicago adds an experienced late-inning reliever to their bullpen. After three years as Houston's closer, the 36-year-old shifted to a setup role in 2024. He was more hittable than usual but still registered a strong 3.49 ERA and 25 holds. Pressly should once again be in line for high-leverage innings with the Cubs. Expect him to compete with Porter Hodge for the primary closer job.
What does it give the Houston Astros
Pressly's contract expires after 2025, so the retooling Astros elected to move the veteran ahead of the season. In return, they picked up Bello, a pitching prospect signed by the Cubs in 2022. The 20-year-old right-hander had a successful first season in 2024 pitching as a starter, and he looks to have decent potential. He will now continue his development in the Astros organization.
Fantasy impact
This trade gives Pressly a boost, as he should pick up more saves in Chicago. His arrival also hurts Porter Hodge's fantasy value. Just don't overrate Pressly, since he did take a step back in 2024 and is not guaranteed to be the closer. As for Bello, he is not on the fantasy radar at this time, but he could become a prospect to follow in coming seasons.
