TWINS ACQUIRE CATCHER CARTAYA

The Minnesota Twins acquired catcher Diego Cartaya from the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Jose Vasquez.

What does it give the Minnesota Twins
In Cartaya, the Twins add a catching prospect who can hit for power. The 23-year-old has yet to make his MLB debut, but he earned a promotion to Triple-A ball last season. Expect him to continue developing in the minors for now, while Minnesota goes with a catching tandem of Ryan Jeffers and Christian Vazquez. Still, Cartaya is a good pickup with the potential to make an impact in the next few seasons.

What does it give the Los Angeles Dodgers
With Will Smith locked in as their catcher long term, the Dodgers chose to move Cartaya in exchange for a pitching prospect. Vasquez is just 20 years old and he was signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2022. The right-hander has pitched as both a starter and reliever in his first two minor-league seasons. He will attempt to take the next few steps in his career in the Dodgers organization.

Fantasy impact
Cartaya had been a decent fantasy prospect, but his progress in the minors slowed this past season. If he can get back on track, he will have a better opportunity with the Twins than with the Dodgers. His reputation as a power-hitting catcher makes him an interesting case to monitor this season. On the other hand, Vasquez is just beginning his career and is not on the fantasy radar at this time.
