JORGE SOLER FOR GRIFFIN CANNING
The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Jorge Soler from the Atlanta Braves for pitcher Griffin Canning.
What does it give the Los Angeles Angels
In Soler, the Angels bring in a veteran power hitter. The 32-year-old is coming off an uneven season, which saw him struggle with the Giants but rebound after a trade to the Braves. He will look to improve on a 21-home run season after slugging 36 the year before. In an Angels lineup that has struggled in recent seasons, Soler should play every day either in the outfield or at designated hitter. It is a gamble, but the Angels need offense and are banking on Soler's upside.
What does it give the Atlanta Braves
This trade allows Atlanta to move on from Soler ahead of next season. The Angels took on the remaining two years of his pricy contract, so the Braves got only a depth pitcher in return. Canning has been a serviceable starter at times across five MLB seasons. However, his numbers declined in 2024 (5.19 ERA, 1.40 WHIP), despite hitting career highs in games started (31) and innings pitched (171.2). Expect Canning to compete for a spot at the back end of Atlanta's rotation in 2025.
Fantasy impact
Soler's fantasy value takes a hit as he departs the high-scoring Braves. Still, he should hit near the top of the order and could be due for a bounce-back year in the power category. Fantasy managers should proceed with caution. Meanwhile, Canning has yet to establish himself as a reliable fantasy pitcher. He also needs to earn a spot in the Braves rotation, which is no guarantee. Wait and see with Canning.
