RED SOX ACQUIRE SALTALAMACCHIA

The Boston Red Sox acquired catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia from the Texas Rangers for first baseman Chris McGuiness, pitcher Roman Mendez, a player to be named later and cash.

What does it give the Boston Red Sox
This was a deal designed for the future--for both teams. Saltalamacchia is currently at AAA and will likely move to Pawtucket, after an injury-filled and disappointing season in Texas. With both Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek due to become free agents this winter, Boston may look to 'Salty' as its catcher of the future.

What does it give the Texas Rangers
The Rangers got a big return for a player they no longer had big plans for. McGuiness is a few years away, but he could help fill a big hole at first base. Mendez has a little upside and the player to be named later should be a decent prospect. Lastly, the bankrupt Rangers will welcome cash in the deal, as well.
